Class #23 March 2, 2017

Charlie taught three challenging calls tonight:

  • Teacup Chain (Remember the girl will visit each boy in turn starting with her corner then each subsequent boy in the clockwise direction.)
  • Ping Pong Circulate (Remember to do a single clap just after the caller makes the call!)
  • Load the Boat (Remember Sharks and Pirates!)

He also reviewed the Chain Thru series (e.g. eight chain thru, three chain thru, and so on)

Our Sheriff, Mary Kay, was out assisting with her husband Jim as he recovers from surgery. Pat did the Sheriff honors for the evening.

Practice and Pizza is this Saturday at John and Sandy Hill’s home at 1 pm. Hope to see you there!

The Bakersfield Fiesta takes place in just over two weeks! It’s always a good time!

Cookie and Barbara have certainly been diligent about their search for a venue for the end of year class party. In the end, The El Toro Mobile Estates Club House, where the party was held last year, will be the location for the event. It’s a great choice!

Nice dancing tonight!

Class #22 Februrary 23, 2017

Tonight Charlie Robertson taught the following calls:

  • Eight Chain Thru
  • Variations of Eight Chain Thru such as Eight Chain Two, Eight Chain One, Eight Chain Four. Note that an Eight Chain Eight is the same as an Eight Chain Thru.
  • Acey Deucey

Our sheriff, Mary Kay (and husband Jim), were out so Pat Westbrook did the honors this evening. Thank you for stepping in Pat!

Sandy and John will be hosting a second Practice and Pizza on Saturday, March 4. Please join us for this chance to get some floor time and to socialize with fellow square dancers!

Judy Milton announced that she has two restaurants lined up for Bakersfield. Be sure to sign up so that she can give the restaurants a head count!

The class held a brief class meeting. Barbara and Cookie have been scouting out candidate venues for the end-of-year party and gave a report on progress. Fred took an action item to see if last year’s venue is available with the understanding that we are under some time pressure to set the reservation.

Nice dancing tonight! We were introduced to our first plus call. That means we have learned a good number of calls so far – approximately fifty.

At the end of class, Quin led us in a rousing rendition of ‘The Happy Wanderer’!

Class #21 February 16, 2017

Great dancing tonight!

Charlie taught us the following calls:

  • Do Paso
  • Allemande Thar
  • Slip the Clutch  (follows the Allemande Thar)
  • Shoot the Start (follows the Allemande Thar)

We had a class meeting and covered the following two items:

End of Year Class Party

Traditionally the class throws a party at the end of the class year. Graduation date is Thursday, June 8, and the party is normally on a weekend afternoon or evening after the graduation date. The party is a thank you to all of the angels who have helped through the course of the year.

The party can be held at a house, a club house, or other venue. Last year it was at a club house. It’s a social event with food and drinks and possibly some square dancing too. The money to pay for the party comes from the sheriffs’ fund and Mary Kay and the other sheriffs have collected over $1000 so far.

Barbara Jansen and Cookie agreed to co-chair this event. Thank you Barbara and Cookie!

Bakersfield Fiesta

The Bakersfield Fiesta is coming up in the middle of March. It’s a week-end of dancing at the Bakersfield Fair Grounds. There are several halls and one is dedicated to dancers at about your level. We always have a good time and it’s a great chance to get a lot of floor time. I certainly encourage you to join us. We will have roughly 70-80 Ramblin Rogues there so you’ll be in good company.

Valentine’s Half Way Dance February 9, 2017

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Ramblin’ Rogues / Church Mice Half Way dance last night and made it a great success! Everyone wore red in celebration of the Valentine's theme. It was another magical Thursday night.

Charlie Robertson and Mike Haworth are both wonderful singers and gave us a great dance. Many dancers observed the calls were faster than usual but I noticed most the squares handled the pressure well!

Thanks to Donna who took over for Pauline to take care of the singles rotation board. She worked that board with steely determination!

A special thanks to Judy and Gary Milton and to Larry and Livia Caruana for the amazing food they provided. The fruit with either a hot chocolate or hot caramel dip caught my attention. The cheesecake ladled with cherry sauce was irresistible, and I saw cookies that I had to work hard to resist.

One dollar now
Will make it true

Our co-sheriff, Linda, was back with us – it was great to see her.

Remember that we have our half-way dance in two weeks (Thursday, February 9) and that the theme is Valentine’s Day so wear red and white to help celebrate. There will be no instruction that evening and dancing starts at 7 pm. This will be a great chance to practice what we have learned so far.
